Eight postures of Sun Salutation for Holistic living

Surya Namaskar or Sun Salutation is a daily exercise which is done in the morning to attain a holistic life. This is a “Astanga Yoga” which comprises of 8 different exercises done in cycles. This yoga is a key to stay fit and healthy throughout the day as it strains all major muscles of the body. Here we will list out the eight Yogas that comprise Surya Namaskar.


It is the starting pose for Surya Namaskara, where the palms are held together in prayer pose. This provides a feeling of relaxation and inner peace. It helps to calm the mind and enhance concentration ahead of the yoga.

Hasta Uttanasana

Known as raised arms, this pose strengthens the spine. While doing this pose, the chest opens up allowing deep and full breathing. Here both the arms are raised up with palms meeting. Head should tilt backwards along with neck and upper part of the body.


Gorilla Pose or hand touching the foot pose is believed to reduce “tamas” or “negative matter” in the body. Doing this helps to feel lighter and more energetic. This asana slows down the heart-beat, which relaxes moth the body and mind. This pose increases digestion.

Ashwa Sanchalanasana

Horse Stepping Pose increases willpower, determination and confidence. It is believed to equalize opposite forces in body and mind to create stability. In this posture, the chest is lifted while the palms remain grounded on either side on the front foot.


It is called the Mountain pose because it resembles the shape of a mountain. This exercise improves concentration. This hatha yoga simulates the heart chakra helping to increase sensations like empathy, love and peace.


Stick pose helps to increase mindfulness. This posture stretches arms, chest, shoulders and spine. It also helps to improve posture.

Ashtanga Namaskara

This is Eight Part Pose as eight parts of the body touches the ground. Resting your forehead, chest, hands, knees and feet on ground, the stomach or hips should not touch the ground. This posture helps to augment flexibility of spine and back. This asana reduces stress and anxiety.


Cobra Pose is attained by rising the chest, looking up to the sky. The body is stretched to maximum. This also the shoulders, chest and back. This asana increases flexibility of the body while elevating mood.
